“And that?”

Hazelnut stood at the window, pressing her face against the pane of glass behind the curtain. She pulled back, looked pointedly at Mommy and said, “And that?”

She pointed out the window.

“House,” Mommy said.

“And that?” Hazelnut asked.

“Van, car, grass, tree, sidewalk, street, leaves, people, family, stop sign, SUV, street light, window, glass, screen, pane...” Every word was punctuated with Hazel’s refrain.

“And that? And that? And that?”

She pulled away from the window and pointed up and around.

“And that? And that? And that?”

“Picture, painting, table, chairs, high chair, stairs, wall, bannister, gate, toys, door, fireplace, bookshelf, sofa, dog...”

“Woof! Woof!” Hazelnut barked while pointing emphatically to Khaleesi. After a beat, she again asked “and that?” She pointed to herself, her face, her body, all over.

“Face, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hair, cheeks, neck, shirt, chest, belly, legs, pants, diaper, feet...”

“Feet! Feet!” Hazel stomped on the hardwood, grinning. “Feet!”

“What do you do with your feet?” Mommy asked.

“And run, climb, dance...” Mommy added. “What do you wear on your feet?”

Hazelnut ran out of the room, returning with a pair of shoes inside her hands like gloves.

“Oops, silly!” Mommy said. “Shoes go on your feet, not your hands.” Mommy helped Hazelnut put on her shoes. “Are you ready to go?”

Hazelnut smiled. “Uh-huh.”

Mommy and Hazelnut walked to the minivan and Hazelnut strapped in to her car seat.

“And that?”

“Car seat, straps, buckle, chair, steering wheel...”

“And that?”

“Buttons, screen, windshield...”

Mommy and Hazelnut drove to the store. Hazelnut continued to ask “And that? And that?” When Mommy stopped answering, Hazelnut started calling out. “Mommy? Mommy? Mommy? Mommy? Mommy?”

“Yes, baby?”

“And that?”

“Traffic. That’s called traffic.”

“Oh. And that?”

Mommy and Hazelnut got to the store. “And that? And that? And that?”

“Shopping cart, food, meat, steak, eggs, milk, apple sauce...”

“Appy! Appy! Appy!” Hazelnut joyously shouted “Appy” while proudly holding the box of apple sauce.

“And that?” Hazelnut asked again, still clutching the apple sauce box.

“Spinach, asparagus, mushrooms, butternut squash, pumpkin, raspberries, onions, garlic, strawberries, blueberries...”

“And that?”

“Line, cashier, debit card, check out. We pay for our what we buy here.”

“And that?”

“Receipt. Time to go home.”

Hazelnut continue her refrain, asking “and that?”

“Lunch, bread, turkey, cheese, orange, apple sauce...”

After Mommy cleaned Hazelnut up from lunch, changed her diaper, Mommy kissed her on the forehead.

“And that?”

“Nap,” Mommy said. Mommy kissed her on the forehead again, and rocked her to the soft mumbling refrain of “and that?” until all that could be heard were the gentle snores of sleeping toddler.
